GENTLE-Y DOES IT
One in five women believe there is no such thing as a true 'gentleman' any more, a study revealed yesterday (Tues).
Research revealed millions of women think the days of men holding doors open, paying the bill and offering their coat are long gone.
Instead, women are now being left to fend for themselves.
Only one in ten said their partner regularly opens a car door for them and more than half said they were often left to carry heavy shopping bags.
A spokesman for online casino www.mrgreen.com, which carried out the poll of 3,000 adults, said: ''Traditionally, men were the ones who held doors open for their partner, paid the bill on a date and were even supposed to walk on the side of the pavement which is closest to the road.
''But it seems this has become a thing of the past and the traditional gentleman is a dying breed.
''Instead, women have to open their own doors and rely on friends to pay them compliments, instead of their loved ones.
''If men want to have more luck with the ladies, they are going to have to turn back the clock and take some tips from their father's generation on how to be a sophisticated gentleman.''
Worryingly, only half of woman said they considered their other half to be a 'true' gentleman.
But despite, nine out of ten men said they believed they acted in a gentlemanly manner towards a woman.
The study also revealed 37 per cent of ladies wished their other half was more gentlemanly, with 28 per cent of those mentioning this request to their partner.
Almost a quarter of women have broken up with someone because they weren't chivalrous.
Having a door opened for them was the main trait women associated with gentlemen, followed by always saying please and thank you and offering to carry heavy bags.
But men refuse to give in, with 40 per cent thinking doing the washing up without being told was 'gentlemanly' behaviour.
A whopping 53 per cent said they would happily ask a woman her age and while 53 per cent of men admitted they should make more effort to behave like a gentleman, a third admitted it's no longer a 'cool' thing to do.
Almost a quarter also said they would like to be more chivalrous but were worried what their mates might say.
Research also revealed more than half of men think the days of the traditional gentleman are over and 37 per cent admitted their dad is more courteous than they are.
One in five men would even turn to their dad or their granddad for advice on how to be more gentlemanly.
