FOOTBALL CRAZY

England is the most football-mad country in the world, a study found yesterday (Fri).

Research revealed English blokes spend more time talking about, watching, reading or playing football than those anywhere else on the planet.

The study found the typical footy-nut watches football matches for two hours and 22 minutes, either in full or in the form of highlights, every week.

They also spend 28 minutes every day chin-wagging about the latest results, tackles, goals or transfer gossip.

In second place was Thailand, where men spend three hours talking about the beautiful game, followed by three-time World Cup winners Brazil, in third.

The research was carried out by Heineken.

Rick Lawrence, Marketing Manager for Heineken UK, said: ''It might not be the news woman want to hear but it seems men really do only think about one thing - and that's football.

''With the UEFA Champions League Final taking place tomorrow it is a huge weekend for football and gives men an excuse, if they need one, to talk about their favourite subject even more.''

The study of 5,300 men aged between 25 and 40 spanned across 15 countries.

Talking was calculated as time dedicated to chatting about football each day to friends, work colleagues, on the phone, texting, via instant messaging and on Facebook.

Watching footy included television highlights, live matches, and switching on the news.

Playing football was considered as time spent kicking a ball around in the park, in a league or on computer games.

And reading was time spent flicking through newspapers, browsing news sites, checking up on football gossip.

Pele's Brazil emerged third in the study, the nation's men spend nearly ten hours each week following the beautiful game.

Ireland was fourth and Mexico came fifth.

The Dutch came last, with their Orange Army spending just 92 minutes watching football each week.
