The average British woman will splash out over #4,000 on bags during her lifetime, it emerged yesterday (Fri).
Handbags coupled with bags for day time, evening, shopping, sports, beach and travel mean the typical women can expect to fork #4,090.
Nationwide, that means the total spend is a staggering #96 BILLION.
It also emerged that, at any given time, they will own 17 bags including five day bags, three evening bags, two work bags and two shopping bags.
Two sports bags, two travel bags and a beach bag - totalling #370 - completes the incredible haul.
UK ladies typically buy three new ones a year, spending #20 on each spree - adding up to a lifetime spend of #4,090.
Yesterday a spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which polled 3,000 women, said: ''It's always been said that women have a love of handbags and this research proves that.
''Along with their shoe collection, handbags take up a lot of the room in a woman's wardrobe.
''But it seems it's important for girls to have a bag for every occasion, and even for every outfit, to make sure they are always coordinated.''
The total cost is based purely on high-street shopping prices - but many women (15 per cent) have paid over #150 for the perfect handbag.
Women are incredibly fond of their bags - one in five considered them their most important wardrobe items.
Two-thirds say they would like even more handbags - even though the same percentage admit they had bags in their collection they rarely used.
A jealous 55 per cent even confessed to getting ''bag envy'' when they spotted other women wearing heavenly holdalls.
And single girls are 10 per cent more likely to get a touch of the green-eyed monster syndrome. Despite this only a third admitted they were obsessed with bags.
Yet over half agreed that wearing a nice handbag made them feel more confident and happy.
And 35 per cent of girls said they had bought a hand-bag in the past to cheer them up.
