PRESS RELEASE: Borro

Written: Tuesday 29th December, 2009

LOVE IT

Women treasure their mobile phones more than their boyfriend, it emerged yesterday (Tues).

Researchers found four in 10 females would be 'devastated' if they lost their phone, but a third admit they could happily live without a man in their life.

Mum emerged as a woman's most treasured possession, followed by photos and their best friend. Amazingly 'Boyfriend' only made number five in the list.

Diamond rings were sixth above pets, laptop and hair straighteners, with handbags completing the top ten.

Yesterday Paul Aitken, CEO for online pawnbroker www.borro.com, which polled 4,000 women, said: ''The list certainly threw up some surprises with boyfriends featuring below photos and mobile phones.

''It's understandable why mums come out top though - they are there to lend an ear, offer support and a best friend to many girls.

''Photos hold fun and significant memories which could be devastating to lose and a mobile phone keeps women connected and it's always by their side.

Other items to make the list of a woman's 20 most treasured possessions included their favourite pair of shoes, vaseline, concealer and mascara.

It also emerged the average woman will spend #624 a year on little treats - from lipstick to jewellery - in a bid to make them feel happier.

Paul Aitken added: ''Diamond rings represent 70 per cent of the loans we give to women so we are not surprised to see them right at the top of the list alongside items such as Mums' and boyfriends' that have a high emotional value but zero material value

''This survey shows that one in five women would consider a pawn loan in contrast to the one in 20 that the National Pawnbroker's Association quoted just three years ago.

''This four-fold increase reflects a change in the times as pawnbroking is increasingly being seen as an effective and practical way to borrow money.

''If women need to release cash from assets such as diamond rings to help fund post-Christmas spending then pawnbroking is a great option.''

The survey found treasured possessions help raise a smile at least five times a day for three quarters of those polled.

But one in five would consider pawning their valuable items to raise much needed cash.

And the majority would even dump their boyfriend or husband for the sum of #700,000.
